MUMBAI: For the second day in a row, five Mumbaikars died due to Covid-related complications. Mumbai has recorded 38 deaths in June so far.
While Covid fatalities were fewer than five in the three preceding months, June has seen a surge in cases and deaths. As per the BMC Covid data, there has been a death every day since June 14.
"As cases rise, deaths will occur.
We have seen this pattern over the last two years: first the cases peak and deaths rise a week or fortnight later," said BMC executive health officer Dr Managala Gomare. She added that deaths may remain high for a few more days, but should start falling thereafter.
The deaths were mainly among the elderly and those with immuno-compromised conditions, a pattern seen throughout the pandemic.
The state logged 2,369 cases, including 1,062 in Mumbai, on Monday.
Doc: Reverse isolate the sr citizens
According to BMC’s Monday Covid update, the city’s five fatalities included four females in the 66 to 88 age group with comorbidities such as diabetes, hypertension and heart disease. The fifth victim was a 78- year-old man with hypertension and heart disease.
The surge began in midMay and peaked on June 16 with 2,366 cases in the city. The state had 4,255 cases that day (daily caseload on June 23 was 5,218 and on June 26 it was 6,493, but this was due to data reconciliation). On Monday, the daily tally was lower than usual due to fewer tests on Sunday. The state had 2,369 cases, including 1,062 in the city, compared to the 3,000-plus in previous weekdays.
The MMR contributed the most to the daily tally with 1,878 cases. Dr Rahul Pandit, a member of the state task force on Covid, said it was time to “reverse isolate” the elderly. “Some of the patients who succumbed were 90-plus years old. They don’t go out and get exposed to Covid. It is the younger people in the home who are not wearing masks and bringing back Covid,” he said. “We need to keep the elderly in relative isolation. Also, the younger ones need to get vaccinated so that the elders at our home are protected,” he added.
