HAZARIBAG: The Hazaribag police seized brown sugar worth around Rs 1 crore from a car and arrested two persons who were smuggling the banned item into the district, the cops said on Monday.
"We were tipped off about a car coming to Hazaribag from Chatra carrying on Sunday brown sugar and accordingly, we set up a check post on the main Hazaribag- Chatra road.
We stopped a car at the Rahmat Nagar check post and upon searching it, we found 700gm of brown sugar," DSP Arif Ekram said.
The arrested duo was identified as Ravikant Kumar alias Shakti of Hethtola village under Giddor police station limits in Chatra and Rahul Kumar of Kallu Chowk Masjid under Lohsinghna police station limits in Hazaribag town.
Police said that both of them have confessed to their crime and have admitted that they were smuggling the seized item to Kallu Chowk, Barabazar and Pelawal in Hazaribag. "The duo told the police that brown sugar is manufactured at Giddor in Chatra at a large-scale by using chemicals," Ekram said.
