LUDHIANA: A man and his wife were arrested by the Ladhowal cops on Monday on the charges that they killed the man’s sister-in-law at Humbran.
The victim, Anita, 22, was found dead in a rented accommodation on June 18, where she used to live with the accused. According to the police, the couple killed her as it disliked her relations with a man.
Of the arrested accused, Amit Sudaye, 32, is a labourer, while Babita, 25, is his wife.
After the murder, the accused had escaped to Madhepura village of Bihar’s Madhubani district. A police team from Ladhowal reached there and arreested them. Joint commissioner of police (city) Narinder Bhargav said: “It came out in our investigation that Amit strangled Anita to death with a dupatta in her sleep, while his wife, Babita, came to know about it later.”
The joint commissioner said: “Realising the gravity of their crime, the couple thought of disappearing with their children and fled after locking the house from outside. Amit wiped off the blood oozing from Anita’s nose and mouth with a T-shirt, which police have recovered along with the dupatta that was used to strangle her to death.”
Assistant commissioner of police (west) Talwinder Singh said: “Amit and Babita got married about 10 years ago and they raised Anita like their daughter. Anita had started to like someone, which had displeased Amit, and he told her to discontinue her relationship with the man. Amit had also thrashed that man a couple of times but Anita had not stopped seeing the latter. Amit got furious when some acquiantances also told him about Anita’s relationship. He took Anita’s relationship as a blot on the family’s reputation.”
The officer said: “On June 17, his family was out shopping when Amit brought home a liquor bottle. The family had dinner together, after which Amit consumed that liquor and fell asleep. Around 3am, a power cut woke him up and it was then that he strangled Anita to death.” The accused couple has two children, aged 1.5 and 3.
