COIMBATORE: The Perur all women police on Monday arrested a 39-year-old farmworker on charges of raping a 65-year-old woman near Kinathukadavu on Sunday.
M Velusamy followed the elderly woman when she went to collect green fodder for her goats in an agricultural field in a village near Kinathukadavu on Sunday morning.
“He forcibly took her to a deserted place under a bridge and raped her,” Perur all women police inspector S Amutha said.
He also punched on her mouth, damaging two teeth, before fleeing the spot.
The woman revealed the sexual assault to her grandson who took her to the Pollachi government hospital and alerted the Perur all women police.
Police registered a case against Velusamy under sections 323, 325, 376, 506 (i) of the Indian Penal Code and a few sections of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and arrested him. Police said the rape survivor’s condition is said to be stable. Later, Velusamy was produced before the Mahila court, which remanded him in judicial custody.
Velusamy, a habitual drunkard, had separated from his wife three years ago, police said.
