Lucknow: Turning the tables on Samajwadi Party in its bastions after three years, BJP won three assembly segments out of five in Azamgarh parliamentary constituency, and two out of three in Rampur to register wins.
As per the Election Commission of India (ECI), BJP candidate from Azamgarh Dinesh Lal Yadav ‘Nirahua’ bagged highest number of 59,278 votes in Sagri, 74,976 votes in Azamgarh Sadar and 66,654 votes in Mehnagar, while SP’s Dharmendra Yadav polled 61,150 votes in Gopalpur and BSP’s Shah Alam alias Guddu Jamali bagged most votes in Mubarakpur.

In 2019, SP president Akhilesh Yadav had swept all the five assembly constituencies in Azamgarh, though in alliance with BSP.
Similarly, in Rampur, BJP’s Ghanshyam Singh Lodhi received most votes in Bilaspur (94,917) and Milak (90,489) assembly constituencies to win with a margin of 42,192 votes against SP’s Asim Raja who polled most votes in Suar, Chamrau, and Rampur assembly seats.
Interestingly, Bilaspur and Milak had helped BJP’s Jaya Prada give a close fight to SP veteran leader Azam Khan in 2019.
It is important to note that polling percentages in Azamgarh and Rampur were lower than in 2019. Azamgarh recorded 48.58% voting in the byelection, down from 57.56% votes in 2019.
Similarly, Rampur parliamentary constituency registered 39.02% voting, much less than 63.19% in 2019.
