IDUKKI: In a heartwarming incident, a pet dog guarded the dead body of its owner for more than a day and alerted the locals about the incident.
K K Soman, a retired sub-inspector of police, was found dead inside the bathroom of his house at SN Padi near Adimali in Idukki district on Sunday. He was 67 years old.
The locals had noticed the barking of the dog from Sunday morning onwards, but the dog had not let people enter the house when the locals tried to find out what had happened.

According to relatives, Soman's son-in-law Umesh N had tried to call him from Saturday evening onwards, but the calls were not answered. Then on Sunday, Umesh reached the home to take a look and noticed that the dog was camping in front of the bathroom and found Soman's dead body inside. Umesh then informed the police and locals of the incident.
Umesh said that the dog, named Unnikuttan alias Unni, had ran towards him when he reached the house and guided him to rooms inside the house.
"The doors of the rooms were all open and all the lights in the house were switched on. The dog showed me that my father-in-law was lying inside the bathroom,” Umesh said.
“I informed the police and neighbours. But when the police reached the spot, they were not allowed to enter the room by the dog. Finally, I asked the officials to move out and then shifted him to a bedroom and the body was retrieved," he said.

"My father-in-law provided special care and food for the dog," he added.
Adimali circle inspector K Sudheer said that when the police and fire force reached the spot, the dog would enter the bathroom and inspect the body.
The dog named Unni and Soman had lived together in the house for several years and both had developed a deep bond. The post-mortem report said that Soman died of a heart attack.
"We suspect the person died on Saturday evening and the incident came to light only the next day," Sudheer said. The body was handed over to relatives after post-mortem. Soman is survived by his wife Geetha and daughter Monisha.
