HYDERABAD: It was a day of celebrations at the government care home in Yousufguda on Tuesday with conjoined twins Veena and Vani clearing their Intermediate second year examination with flying colours. The two, who were allowed to write the test from the home, secured 70% and 71%, respectively.
They had declined an additional time of five minutes for the examination offered by the Telangana State Board of Intermediate Education (TSBIE).
In fact, according to their invigilator, they submitted some of the papers well before time.

"Initially after the result was announced, the 18-year-olds were a little upset as they were hoping for higher scores. But they soon joined in the fun when other children at the home got sweets and distributed them among the inmates. There was also some singing and dancing," said a beaming Safiya Khanam, superintendent of girls home, who is affectionately called ‘mummy' by the twins. An elated Safiya said it was the sheer perseverance of the two girls, their medical condition notwithstanding, along with the support of teachers and others staff at the home that helped them sail through smoothly. Now the two want to pursue chartered accountancy, she added.
"Since they are so keen on it, the department of women development and child welfare (WDCW), Telangana, is providing a private tutor to coach them for various exams," Safiya said.
Joined at the head, Veena and Vani were brought to Niloufer Hospital in 2003 — soon after they were born. They stayed on at the facility till 2017 as inpatients after rounds of consultations and procedures to surgically separate them failed. Their parents also expressed their inability to provide for them due to limited resources. Since then, the hospital along with WDCW has been looking after them. Five years ago the two were moved to the Yousufguda home for better academic support.
"And they have made the most of the help. Both Veena and Vani used to wake up by 4.30am and study with a tutor until 7am. Later in the day, from 1pm to 4pm they did self-studies," shared Safiya.
Telangana's WDCW minister Satyavathi Rathod also extended her best wishes to the twins.
