PUNE: The Bhosari police on Monday arrested a man from
Karnataka on the charge of duping a 26-year-old woman from Chinchwad and her family members of Rs64.71 lakh on the promise of giving them handsome returns on their investment in forex trading.
The suspect and his three accomplices took Rs1.13 crore from the woman, her parents and brother between December 2021 and March this year.
They returned only Rs47 lakh to them, the Bhosari police said. The officer said, "The women and her family members sold their land, took loans and also spent their personal savings to earn '60 percent profit on their investments in just 75 days'." The officer said the complainant works with the marketing unit of a private company. "Last year, she had come across a company's profile on a social media site that promised 60 percent on investments in just 75 days," the officer said.
He added that after the woman's brother was also convinced of the profit they would make from the investments, he, his sister and their parents collected Rs1.13 crore by selling their land, pooling personal savings and by taking loans from three credit cooperative societies.
"The suspects returned Rs47 lakh to the woman and gave cheques of Rs64.71 lakh, which bounced," the officer said.
