HYDERABAD: With an overall pass percentage of 65.19% this year, Telangana saw a reasonably better performance from the students appearing for intermediate examinations. Of the 9.07 lakh students who appeared for the two examinations, a total of 5.91 lakh students passed. Amongst them, the pass percentage of girls was better across two years with a 73.76% pass percentage as compared to boys, whose pass percentage was only 55.5%.
Education minister Sabitha Indra Reddy said that the students have done a good job despite trying times under the pandemic.
The pass percentage was dramatically better than last year when the initial results were showing a pass percentage of merely 49%, triggering mass protests from students. Eventually, the government decided to give the students of both years an all-pass result. Stakeholders said post-pandemic normalcy with physical classes and an easier examination held did the trick for these students.
"This year we had more than 100 days of physical classes as against the 2020 academic year when hardly 22 days of classes were held. The performance of students also improved as only 70% of the syllabus was asked for the examinations and more choice-based questions were given as compared to last year," said Dr P Madhusudhan Reddy, president of the government junior college lecturers association.
Others said the Telangana State Board of Intermediate Education made a wise move by handing out basic learning material to all students. "The results are better this year due to the performance of the government colleges. They received basic learning material to help students focus their preparation," said Gouri Satish, president of Telangana private junior college management association. Meanwhile, the board has opened the option of rechecking and re-exam from June 30 to July 6.
