AHMEDABAD: The city on Tuesday breached 200 daily Covid cases mark after five days and recorded 211 cases, the highest in 131 days or more than four months.
Likewise, Gujarat recorded 475 new cases, the highest in 129 days. It was the state's fifth 400-plus tally in one week.
Analysis of the active cases as of Monday for the top 10 states and top 15 districts in India based on a Covid cases aggregator portal indicated that Ahmedabad had 45% of Gujarat's active Covid cases, similar to Mumbai's case load vis-a-vis Maharashtra.
Only Bengaluru with 95% of Karnataka's active cases load had the higher rate.
In terms of active Covid cases, Ahmedabad stood 15th among Indian districts, whereas Gujarat stood 9th among Indian states. In terms of active cases per 1 lakh population however, the state was much behind at 4 persons compared to 80 in Kerala, 23 in Delhi, 20 in Maharashtra, and 11 in Tamil Nadu.
Analysis of the state's cases vis-a-vis eight municipal corporations also indicated that 82% of the state's cases in June were from the cities, and only 12% from outside of it. In the past seven days, the ratio has gone down a bit at 77%, indicating higher spread in other districts.
"The primary reason for the phenomenon is poorer testing outside urban areas. If there are no tests, there would be no cases. Ahmedabad being the biggest city of the state, it has relatively higher testing due to medical procedures, travel purposes and awareness. Other factors include higher movement of population and population density," said a city-based epidemiologist.

With the discharge of 107 patients, the active cases tally in Ahmedabad reached 1,255, whereas for Gujarat, the figure was 2,793. The other cases included 76 from Surat city, 35 from Vadodara city, 17 from Jamnagar city, 14 from Mehsana, 12 each from Vadodara and Navsari, and 10 from Amreli among others. With the update, 3 out of 33 districts in Gujarat have zero active cases. The hospitalization however has remained low, said officials.
Gujarat in 24 hours vaccinated 7,692 persons for the first dose and 22,610 for the second. In all, 5.4 crore are administered first and 5.32 crore second dose of Covid vaccine. The state administered booster doses to 22,419 persons, taking total to 39.97 lakh.
