Guwahati: The Gauhati High Court has directed the state government to respond to a PIL seeking solution to the annual floods, leaving a trail of deaths and worsening artificial floods in the capital city.
The division bench of Chief Justice RM Chhaya and Justice Soumitra Saikia was hearing a PIL on Monday, filed by advocate Sandeep Chamaria where he raised several issues related to the floods and artificial floods.
The respondent has been asked to reply by July 25.
The petitioner through his plea sought direction for making permanent solutions for the floods by implementing various water management schemes in an expeditious manner. He also sought direction to the government to bring in and implement schemes for rehabilitation of the flood-hit people. “Reconstruction of the embankments breached by the floods to protect the people, particularly living along the river sides. One more important concern, which I have raised through the petition, is the declaration of Assam floods as a national disaster,” he added.
