THIRUVANANTHPURAM: The assembly on Tuesday witnessed heated exchanges on the gold smuggling case, with the opposition questioning the “double standards” of the government towards two accused in the case and chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan alleging that the opposition had become the voice of the Sangh Parivar in the assembly.
The government had, in an unexpected move, accepted the opposition notice seeking leave for an adjournment motion on the subject.
It had earlier refused to discuss similar motions twice.
Referring to senior bureaucrat M Sivasankar, opposition leader V D Satheesan said one of the accused in gold smuggling case who tried to whitewash the government has been offered a top government post and no action has been initiated against him for writing a book containing sensitive matters pertaining to the case without permission. Meanwhile, the other accused — Swapna Suresh — who moved legally and recorded her statement under Section 164 of CrPC has been charged with conspiracy.
“The statement under 164 CrPC is recorded only if the magistrate is convinced about the statement. The opposition cannot be a mute spectator if such a statement is revealed in the media by that person herself,” Satheesan said.
