Lentils need a cold environment. It is extremely resilient and can withstand harsh winters and frost to a large extent. It needs a chilly environment for vegetative growth and a warm environment for maturation. Growth is best at temperatures between 18 and 30°C.

The ideal soil types for growing lentils are well-drained loam soils with a neutral response. Lentils cannot be grown on acidic soil. So that seeds could be sown at a consistent depth, the soil needed to be friable and weed-free. One deep ploughing and two to three cross harrowing should be performed on thick soils. The land should be levelled after harrowing by creating a little slope to facilitate irrigation.
