PANAJI: After a week of heavy rainfall, the quantum of precipitation came down further during the last 24 hours till Sunday morning, as the India meteorological department (IMD), Panaji, recorded a daily average of just 15.1mm for Goa.
As forecast by the meteorological centre, the rainfall, though widespread, was light to moderate during this period.
It was only Ponda that recorded close to heavy rainfall at 60mm. Among other centres, Valpoi recorded 32.8mm, Pernem 25.6mm, Sanguem 24.5mm, Sanquelim 13.2mm and other centres on a lesser scale.
After the wettest 24-hour spell till 8.30am on Friday, July 1, the intensity of the monsoon decreased, as fluctuations are part of the season. IMD, Panaji had recorded a state average rainfall of 43.3mm on Saturday morning, as compared to 15.1mm on Sunday.
The seasonal total touched 970.9mm while a rainfall of 1,030.4mm is considered normal at this stage. The deficit which mounted to 47% on June 20 and was slashed to 4% on June 30, has now risen slightly to 6%.
But a surplus or shortfall less than 20% is considered within normal range. IMD, Delhi has forecast a normal monsoon for this season.
The rainfall activity is likely to pick up from Monday, as there is possibility of very heavy showers at one or two locations in both districts in the next few days, as per the IMD bulletin.
A cyclonic circulation over Jharkhand, which is likely to trigger a low pressure area over the same region, is expected to increase rainfall activity over the west coast.
