Mega Millions ticket sales brisk in New Hampshire as jackpot soars over $1 billion
The Mega Millions jackpot has climbed to an estimated $1.28 billion, the third largest in history.
There have been three winners of jackpots over $100 million in the past six years in New Hampshire, including a person who bought a ticket at Reeds Ferry Market in Merrimack and claimed a $560 million grand prize.
That winner went to court in a battle to remain anonymous.
The odds of winning the big prize aren't great, at 1 in over 302 million. But according to Charlie McIntyre, executive director of the New Hampshire Lottery, that's not stopping people from trying, with quick sales of lottery tickets at retailers across the state.
He said New Hampshire is expected to exceed $200,000 in sales per hour.
"Because it's the Lakes Region season, the tourist season, we're seeing a bunch of folks from out of state play," McIntyre said. "So what I recommend if you bought and you're out of state, first move here. It's a great state to live, but we're the only New England state that doesn't take state income tax."
He said the tax break could save the winner $35 to $40 million of the cash value.
