What started as a side hustle and a way to celebrate family members’ special occasions has now become a full-time business for Janice Hanney.

The Hocking resident said she had previously owned a home decor and gift business for more than 10 years and had always enjoyed the gift-giving concept.

Then, while working part-time in an administration job in 2018, she decided to start again with Brew Crates, creating gift hampers with WA craft beers and snacks in a timber crate.

“Seeing the growth of the craft beer industry in WA, and with several members of my family loving a good beer, the idea came to me that this could be a great gift idea for those often hard to buy for or anyone who appreciates a nice beer,” Ms Hanney said.

“With over 90 independent breweries around WA, new styles of beers being created and seasonal releases, there is so much choice.”

Then in 2020, Ms Hanney took things full-time and expanded by creating a second business, WA Gifts and Hampers, to offer a wider range of WA-made products such as wine, spirits, ciders, sweet and savoury treats, teas and coffee, candles and pamper items.

“What I love most about my business is knowing that I am spreading happiness, passing on well-wishes, congratulations, thanks or condolences on someone’s behalf with a gift that has been made with love,” Ms Hanney said.

“Then delivering the gift and seeing the smiles and gratitude of those receiving it is something very special.”

Ms Hanney is preparing to take part in the 2022 Wanneroo Business Expo on August 11 at The Marina Mindarie, where she will showcase her local small businesses alongside more than 40 others.

“I have exhibited at the expo once before and it was a really great vibe,” she said. “People were very keen to chat and find out more about our business offerings.

“And with so many businesses now operating online, this is a great opportunity to meet the person behind the business and for business owners to enjoy the face-to-face marketing opportunities.”

The business networking and promotion event, run by the Wanneroo Business Association in partnership with the City of Wanneroo, was initially planned for March but had to be postponed because of COVID-19 restrictions.

It will run from 11.30am to 3.30pm and entry is free for visitors to chat with exhibitors, and explore local products and services.

A closing party with then be held from 4pm at The Boat.
