Two people who plan to split the summer’s $1.3 billion Mega Millions jackpot have finally come forward — anonymously — to collect their winnings.
The pair, who bought the winning ticket at a Speedway in Des Plaines, Ill., are “over the moon,” they told the Illinois State Lottery.
“These winners are now in the enviable position of deciding what to do with their newfound fortune,” Illinois Lottery Director Harold Mays said in a statement Wednesday.
“They stopped into the Speedway in Des Plaines and grabbed a Mega Millions ticket while they were there. That turned out to be an absolutely life-changing decision.”
The duo will split the lump sum payout of $780.5 million.
The enormous jackpot, won in late July, is the third largest prize in lottery history after rolling over for 29 consecutive games. Only a $1.59 billion Powerball, split by three tickets in 2016, and a $1.54 billion Mega Millions, won by a single ticket in 2018, were higher.
