WASHINGTON DC - The US footwear industry is calling for different sustainability standards to the rest of the apparel industry insisting that umbrella 'fashion' standards don't work in the real world.

The Footwear Distributors and Retailers of America (FDRA) made the call in an article published on its Shoesustainability website in which it insists that "shoes aren't shirts".

Arguing that 80 per cent of fashion's environmental impact is down to materials and manutfacturing, it points out that shoes contain many more varied materials and are manufactured in vastly different ways to clothes.
