A lawsuit filed by residents against the operators of Alden nursing homes claims that an intentional lack of staffing has led to numerous injuries and illness.
“Residents have fallen down stairs while strapped to a wheelchair,” the lawsuit states, “fractured their neck when dropped by one person using a mechanical lift that requires two people, and ingested poisonous chemicals due to lack of care and supervision.”
Alden is a large, for-profit nursing facility network operating more than 50 facilities that house thousands of residents in Illinois, with more than $250 million in annual revenue. Company officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the new lawsuit.

Chicago officials say nearly 1,500 migrants have arrived from Texas as of Tuesday
Nearly 1,500 migrants have arrived in Chicago from Texas as of Tuesday, city officials said. The migrants have been bused to Chicago over the last several weeks as part of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s promise to send migrants to sanctuary cities as a way to criticize the nation’s immigration policies.
Joe Dutra, public affairs director with the city’s Department of Family and Support Services, said in a statement that as of Tuesday, Chicago has welcomed 1,452 migrants, which include individuals, families, children and infants.
Family of Oak Forest shooting victims share grief during candlelight vigil
The lawn of Oak Forest City Hall was lit with candlelight Monday night as hundreds showed up to remember three family members killed as a result of domestic violence.
Lupe Gomez, 43, Briana Rodriguez, 22, and Emilio Rodriquez, 20 were all shot by 44 year-old Carlos Gomez before their home was set on fire, police said.
Buona plans franchise expansion to take Italian beef to southern and western US
Berwyn-based Italian beef institution Buona announced it would open restaurants outside of the Chicago area and northwest Indiana under a new franchise program.
