Good morning, Chicago.

A lawsuit filed by residents against the operators of Alden nursing homes claims that an intentional lack of staffing has led to numerous injuries and illness.

“Residents have fallen down stairs while strapped to a wheelchair,” the lawsuit states, “fractured their neck when dropped by one person using a mechanical lift that requires two people, and ingested poisonous chemicals due to lack of care and supervision.”

Alden is a large, for-profit nursing facility network operating more than 50 facilities that house thousands of residents in Illinois, with more than $250 million in annual revenue. Company officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the new lawsuit.

Great Smoky solitude: How to escape the crowd at the most-visited national park in Townsend

Great Smoky Mountains National Park is by far the most heavily visited national park in the country, attracting more than 12 million visitors each year and three times the number of runner-up Yellowstone. Over the years, both Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg have become tourist destinations in their own right, and for the mass of visitors here, the national park seems almost like a secondary adventure to squeeze in, between gawking at wax statues of celebrities and dinner at Margaritaville.

Luckily, there’s an alternative close at hand. It’s a much different scene 22 miles away in Townsend, Tennessee.
