Cost of living: Couple outline 'significant impact' of energy bills

With temperatures dropping, and energy bills set to rise, many people may be wondering how to keep the house warmer for longer periods. By taking into account these small suggestions, people may be able to make big changes.

The “secret” to keeping the house warm is “insulation,” an expert explained.

Jean Graham, consumer energy expert at USwitch, recommended people buy draft excluders to fit around doors and key holes at home.

Draft proofing could save people up to £45 a year. Britons could save even more if people put a rug down on hard wood floor as 10 percent of heat energy is said to be lost without this.

Tiktoker 'That Property Guy' said draft excluders are a “great way to keep your house warm,” and are also simple to install. Being such a low cost tool, people can make savings each year.

Another tip on keeping the house warmer for longer comes after using the oven.

Personal finance expert Emmanuel Asuquo explained Britons should make the most of the oven while it is on.

Using the oven is more costly than using the microwave, however if someone does chose to use this applicane, it can be used as well to heat up the room.

After people finish using it to cook, people can leave it open and it can potentially heat up the room.

DON'T MISS

Additionally, to save money on energy bills, Britons can alter settings on their thermostat.

Lyn Beattie, personal finance expert, urged Britons to get the temperature right on their thermostat.

She said: “The average temperature is around 23 degrees which people would have had it at last year so I would recommend putting that to 20 degrees, even 19 if you can bare it."

Alternatively people can get a smart thermostat which is a “great piece of technology”, Mr Asuquo said.

People can link their smart phones to it and control it themselves. Every degree could decrease the energy bills by 10 percent.

Another tip mentioned about the warming the house was that people should heat smaller area’s rather than the whole house. For example, buying an electric blanket to keep an individual warm rather than the whole room could save some money each month.

Additionally, according to a recent report by British Gas, not leaving appliances on standby that are over five years old could save up to £147 a year.

Newer appliances may use less than older ones but it all adds up. For example, games consoles can be around £12 a year on standby, a microwave £16 and a computer £11.22.

Mr Asuquo also recommended that Britons use eco mode on their washing machines as it could save around 30 to 60 percent on their bills.

“It’s there for a reason people, use it,” he added.

Alternatively, people could try washing their clothes less. Saving the chore of one wash per week could save up to £20 on bills each year.

Ms Graham also suggested that people should not wash clothes their clothes after just one wear as this could save money.

“if It smells alright it can be worn again,” she added.

Lastly people can cut the costs of their water bills by not showering at home.

Tiktoker “Duchessofthrift” shared with her followers her tip of using the shower and hair dryer at the gym to save money on the bills at home. By using the facilities at the gym or work, people can save up to £15 a month one energy bills. This is up to £180 a year.

If Britons take into account all the tips mentioned, they could save up to £392 a year.
