Twitter Elon Musk News updates: Twitter has fired the majority of its over 200 employees in India as part of mass layoffs across the globe ordered by its new owner Elon Musk who is looking to make his $44 billion acquisition work. Here are more updates:
- Twitter employees receive emails about mass job cuts
- Sources said the layoffs are across engineering, sales and marketing, and communications teams.
- There is no clarity yet on the severance package to be paid to employees laid off in India.
- The entire marketing and communications department in India has been sacked.
- Musk began his innings at Twitter last week by firing the CEO Parag Agrawal as well as the CFO and some other top execs.
- This was followed by an exodus of top management.
- Musk has now started a massive exercise to downsize the company's global workforce.
- Another source said the layoffs have affected a 'significant chunk' of the India team.
- The full details of the job cuts were not immediately available.

Will Twitter layoffs violate US law?
- Twitter is already facing a proposed class action claiming the layoffs are imminent and will violate US and California laws if employees are not given advance notice or severance pay.
- The federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act requires businesses with 100 or more employees to provide 60 days' notice before engaging in mass layoffs. The law defines mass layoffs as those affecting at least 500 employees during a 30-day period, or at least 50 employees if layoffs impact at least one-third of a company's workforce. Employers can provide workers with 60 days of severance pay in lieu of giving notice.

Twitter Inc began notifying employees affected by a far-reaching round of job cuts, and some learned they’ll be paid for two months. Workers around the world were checking two email addresses to find out if they still have a job, according to an internal memo sent to employees and seen by Bloomberg. An email to their work account means they’ve been retained. A letter in their personal inbox means they’ve been fired. Twitter promised to notify workers by 9 a.m. San Francisco time on Friday and temporarily closed offices and suspended badge access “to help ensure the safety of each employee as well as Twitter systems and customer data,” the memo said.
Twitter sued for mass layoffs by Musk without enough notice
- The lawyer who sued Twitter Inc. 'pre-emptively' on the eve of mass layoffs by Elon Musk said she’s 'pleased' to learn at least some employees will continue being paid until Jan. 4.
- Attorney Shannon Liss-Riordan said that the billionaire “is making an effort to comply” with the law, less than half a day after she accused the company in a class-action federal lawsuit of violating federal and California statutes restricting companies from mounting mass layoffs on short notice.
- Liss-Riordan, who filed a similar lawsuit over June layoffs at Musk’s automaker Tesla Inc., said she “will be monitoring the situation” at Twitter to ensure employees receive appropriate notice and compensation.

- China may soon shorten COVID-19 quarantine requirements for inbound travellers from the current 10 days to seven or eight days.
- Under the new rule, arrivals would need to spend five days in a quarantine facility and a further two or three days at home, one of the sources said, compared with the current requirement of seven days in a facility, typically a hotel, and a further three days under home monitoring.
- Such a move would follow China's decision in June to slash quarantine time for inbound travellers by half. Health officials at the time said the shorter incubation period of the Omicron variant allowed for shorter quarantine times.
Forex reserves post biggest weekly gain in more than a year
