The Met Office also announced 48 flood alerts, warning that inundation might be possible. The area covers most of Wales and southern England.

With strong winds accompanying the deluge of rain, forecasters are warning Britons to stay safe and remain vigilant. The gusts are expected across the UK, particularly over hills and around coasts.

Forecasters are warning that buses and trains will probably be affected, with journey times taking longer, while flooding of homes and businesses is possible.

This will add to the mayhem for Britons wanting to travel around the UK this weekend as they will also have to navigate the rail strikes.

In Scotland, the wind warning covers Angus, Clackmannanshire, Dundee, Perth and Kinross, Stirling, and Argyll and Bute.

Forecasters say 0.7-1.2 inches (20-30mm) of rain is expected with 1.8 inches (45mm) possible on high ground, and given the saturated ground there is a risk of some localised flooding.
