Kim Jong-un is planning to build up the "most powerful" nuclear weapons forced in the world, according to North Korea 's state-run media.

The Supreme Leader's pledge to bolster the rogue nation's defences was revealed as he promoted a number of military officials on Saturday, and comes only days they tested a new long-range missile.

Hailing his country's "mighty" personnel in an article published by the KNCA news agency, he outlined North Korea's nuclear ambitions.

Kim said: "Our relentless work to build nuclear forces to firmly defend the dignity and sovereignty of the state and the people by hundreds of millions of units is the greatest and most important revolutionary cause, and its final goal is to seize the world's strongest strategic force, absolute power unprecedented in the century."

Kim's statement went on to claim that "trustworthy leading cadres and scientists in the field of defence science research" had developed the "world’s most powerful strategic weapon" - a new intercontinental ballistic missile named "Hwaseongpo".

"By successfully developing and completing the development of nuclear weapons and making a remarkable leap forward in the development of nuclear weapons, the country's firm determination and decisive execution power toward the goal of the world's most powerful military, enormous potential and confident victory are shown to the world without fail," the statement said.

The test of North Korea's Hwasong-17 ICBM missile on November 18 - which sparked alarm in Tokyo by landing in the Sea of Japan - is the latest in series of military stunts thought to be aimed at increasing the country's leverage in future diplomacy.

During the launch, Kim took his daughter to a meeting with missile scientists and even called her his 'most beloved' child - fuelling debate among international observers over whether she is being primed to one day become his successor.

Named Ju Ae, she is believed to be 10-years-old and was pictured for the first time ever last weekend in a new set of state media photos.

In the images she can be seen watching the launch with her parents and older officials, with another photograph showing her walking hand-in-hand with Kim past a huge missile loaded on a launch truck.
