Russia warns of ‘high risk’ of conflict between nuclear-weapon states
Moscow, Dec 1 (EFE).- Any conflict with conventional weapons between nuclear-weapon states is likely to escalate into a nuclear war, Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov warned Thursday.
“There’s a high risk that a conflict between nuclear powers will turn into a nuclear war,” Lavrov said during a televised press conference.
The Russian official recalled when president Vladimir Putin and his United States counterpart Joe Biden signed a declaration stating that “a nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought” in June 2021.
“There will be no winner of the nuclear war,” Lavrov added. “A war between nuclear states is unacceptable.”
Russia’s top diplomat highlighted that Moscow had been “anxiously watching” the West’s rhetoric accusing Russia of preparing “some alleged provocations using weapons of mass destruction.”
The West, including the US, the United Kingdom and France, is doing everything to increase its direct participation in the war in Ukraine, Lavrov said.
“This is a dangerous trend,” he stressed.
Lavrov added that addressing strategic stability with the US without taking the situation in Ukraine into account was “impossible.”
The government in Kyiv has set a goal of “defeating, or even destroying Russia, on the battlefield,” he said.
“How can the goal of defeating Russia not bear significance for strategic stability, considering that they want to destroy a key strategic stability actor?” Lavrov concluded.EFE
