Organisers of the African Indigenous Language Film Festival (Ailff) have announced dates and jury members for the maiden edition. Scheduled to hold between March 28 and 31, 2023 at the Prestigious Viva Cinema, Ikeja – Lagos, the festival, which opened call for submission on December 1, 2022, is aimed at projecting and furthering the progress of African Indigenous language filmmaking through film screening, training workshops and conferences to proffer lasting solutions to distribution and monetisation challenges of indigenous language film genre. According to the festival promoter, Osezua Stephen-Imobhio, the festival jury is chaired by Prof. Jeremiah Methuselah, who is the Rector of the National Film Institute, Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria. Members of the jury include Nigerian award winning actors, Mallam Sanni Mu’azu, Chief Ngozi Ezeonu, former president of the Actors Guild Nigeria (AGN) Emeka Ike, Doyin Amodu (UK based filmmaker and Chairperson, TAMPAN UK chapter), Ketsia Fridjon (Cameroun-based film lecturer, dubbing producer and distributor of African content). Ailff, which focuses exclusively on films shot in African indigenous languages, also has Ms. Rahab Njeri Kimani, Nairobi, Kenya-based film distribution expert and Frank K. THE Pitcher Award, promoted as the Pan-African Benchmark for Creative Excellence, has opened call for entries for the 2023 edition of the awards. The awards ceremony holds as part of the Pitcher Festival, which has been scheduled to hold between May 8 and 20, 2023. Closing date for entries, according to the organisers, is March 31, 2023. The Pitcher Awards Show is the climax of the Pitcher Festival of Creativity and will hold on May 20, 2023. The show will hold as an in-person event in Lagos and will be streamed online and broadcast on major TV Networks across Africa. Winners will be announced at this event. Each winning entry will also have its own dedicated page on our website and in print in the special Pitcher Awards Showcase publication. Now in its sixth edition, the Pitcher Awards stands out as one of Africa’s most valuable and internationally respected accolades for creative excellence. Every year, its jury members from across the region come together to review and benchmark creativity expressed across Africa through various media including, print, film, audio, outdoor, PR, Entertainment, Digital, as well as creativity that has been specifically deployed for the good of mankind. Entries into Pitcher Awards are open to work created, released or implemented anywhere on the continent. This means that even projects created outside of Africa but designed specifically for implementation or release in Africa are eligible to enter. Berlinale World Cinema Fund Announces Recommendations
THE Berlinale World Cinema Fund (WCF) at its 37th jury session made 11 funding recommendations for projects from Argentina, Bangladesh, Central African Republic, Chad, Colombia, Iran, Peru, Tunisia and Venezuela. The current funding amounts to a total of 440,000 Euros and the WCF stated that it is pleased to be able to support independent cinema even more strongly in times of crisis and to promote the visibility of the cultural complexity of our world. “More and more high-quality projects are being submitted to the WCF for documentary formats, with the trend also being confirmed by the results of this jury meeting. The submissions are deep and highly emotional projects that show, from various sides, a study of the reality of characters who feel instantly familiar, and who convey their cultural surroundings to us,” comments Vincenzo Bugno, head of WCF, on the funding recommendations. Bugno added that the WCF jury made its selection from 176 submitted projects from a total of 51 countries. The funding recommendations encompass funding in the amount of 440,000 Euros and projects recommended include projects by two directors that have participated in Berlinale Talents in the past, and one project that was presented at the Berlinale Co-Production Market in 2022.

The members of the jury are the documentary film producer and documentary creative advisor Marta Andreu (Spain), the producer Zsuzsanna Kiràly (Germany / Austria), film scholar and curator Viola Shafik (Germany / Egypt) and Vincenzo Bugno (Italy / Germany), the head of the WCF. Additionally, the jurors for WCF Africa are the producer, festival director of the pan-African film festival FESPACO and the Berlin festival Afrikamera, Alex Moussa Sawadogo (Burkina Faso) and the Berlinale delegate for Sub-Saharan Africa Dorothee Wenner (Germany). Two of the funded production projects are The Difficult Bride, director: Rubaiyat Hossain (Bangladesh). Production: Khona Talkies (Bangladesh), Aadnan Imtiaz Ahmed. Feature film. Funding: €50,000. The project participated in the Berlinale Co-Production Market in 2022 and the director participated in Berlinale Talents in 2017. The second project is Le Fardeau, director: Elvis Ngaïbino (Central African Republic). Production: Makongo Films (Central African Republic), Vicky Nelson Wackoro; Kiripi Films (Democratic Republic of the Congo), Dieudo Hamadi. Documentary form. Funding: €30,000. Intended additional funding by WCF ACP: €60,000
