Cyclonic storm 'Mandous' to cross Chennai coast today! Schools-colleges closed

There has been big news about the cyclonic storm 'Mandous' over the Bay of Bengal. It is expected to pass between Sriharikota and Puducherry in the neighboring state of Andhra Pradesh at midnight today i.e. December 9. At the same time, heavy rains are expected in many parts of Tamil Nadu including the capital Chennai. The governments of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Andhra Pradesh are alert and taking precautionary measures to deal with the storm. Along with this, the National Disaster Relief Force has also been deployed.

The Tamil Nadu government said 12 teams comprising around 400 personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Management Force have been deployed in Nagapattinam and Thanjavur in the Cauvery delta region, Chennai, its three neighboring districts, and Cuddalore. With this, a holiday has been declared in schools and colleges in these areas on Friday. Schools and colleges have been closed in about 27 districts, including Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Ranipet, Vellore, and Tiruvallur, in view of the cyclonic storm 'Mandous'.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said in an updated bulletin that cyclonic storm 'Mandous' moved over the southwest Bay of Bengal and is about 480 km east southeast of Chennai and 390 km from Kariyakal. The cyclone is likely to cause light to moderate rain at most places and heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places and extremely heavy rainfalls at isolated places over north coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry on December 9. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected over adjoining south coastal Andhra Pradesh and north interior Tamil Nadu and Rayalaseema.

A red alert for heavy rain has been issued in 13 districts of Tamil Nadu, including Chengalpattu, Villupuram, and Kanchipuram districts. With this, it is being said that the cyclonic storm 'Mandous' is about 160 km away from Puducherry and Chennai. Let us tell you that the Tamil Nadu government has taken all precautionary measures in view of the forecast of heavy rains.
