    Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh results 2022 news live updates: The BJP has posted a historic victory in Gujarat, winning 156 seats in the 182-member state assembly.

    The Congress party finished second, winning 17 seats, while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) that made its debut with a high-decibel campaign won 5 seats. Independents won three seats and the Samajwadi Party picked up one.

    The BJP improved its vote share to 53 per cent from 49 per cent last time, while the Congress party's vote share fell sharply from 42 per cent to 27 per cent, as a good chunk of its voters appeared to have switched to AAP, which secured 13 per cent of the votes counted.

    The BJP not only beat its best showing till date - 127 seats in 2002, but also surpassed the record set by the Congress party in 1985, when it won 149 seats under the leadership of late Madhavsinh Solanki.

    In winning a seventh term, the BJP also matched the Left Front's feat in West Bengal. The BJP has not lost an election in Gujarat since 1995.

    Himachal Pradesh results: The Congress wrested Himachal Pradesh from the BJP winning 40 seats in the 68-member Assembly. The in the hill state which maintained its tradition of not voting any incumbent government to power since 1985.

    According to the results declared by the Election Commission, the BJP won 25 seats, while eight state ministers including Suresh Bhardwaj, Ram Lal Markanda and Surveen Chaudhary lost.

    The Independents won from three constituencies and the Aam Aadmi Party, which had contested from 67 seats, failed to open its account.

    The BJP and the Congress contested on all 68 constituencies.

    AAP, whose campaign had tapered after the initial phase, bagged 1.10 percent of votes. The CPI (M), which fought on eleven seats, also did not win any seat and its sitting MLA from Theog lost. It got 0.66 percent of votes, Independents and others got 10.39 percent while 0.59 percent of votes went to NOTA.

    Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge hailed the people of Himachal Pradesh and his party leaders as the Congress secured a much-needed win, riding on anti-incumbency and a slew of poll promises including bringing back the old pension scheme and providing jobs to the youth and Rs 1500 to every woman.

    Party leader Rahul Gandhi assured the people that every promise made by the Congress will be fulfilled.

    The Congress now gets down to the task of choosing the next chief minister of Himachal Pradesh.

    Pratibha Singh, Mukesh Agnihotri, Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu: The 3 main contenders

    Pratibha Singh, Congress’s Himachal Pradesh unit chief and Mandi LS MP. She is the widow of Virbhadra Singh, who had been chief minister of Himachal Pradesh six times.

    Mukesh Agnihotri, a journalist who turned to politics, was the leader of the opposition in the assembly. He has won five times from Haroli.

    Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu is former state president. He is the head of the party’s campaign committee. Started with student politics in the NSUI, then proceeded to become the state Youth Congress chief and a muncipal councillor before coming to state-level politics. He won for the fifth time from Nadaun.

    • Outgoing Jai Ram Thakur won the Seraj seat by a margin of more than 31,000 votes.
    • Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu wins from Nadaun assembly seat, defeating BJP's Vijay Kumar Agnihotri
    • Congress Dhani Ram Shandil retained Solan defeating BJP candidate Rajesh Kashyap.
    • Congress' Kuldeep Rathore won from Theog assembly seat against BJP's Ajay Shyam.
    • BJP's D S Thakur defeated six-time Congress MLA Asha Kumari in Dalhousie seat.
    • Congress MLA Bhawani Singh won Fatehpur seat defeating Rakesh Pathania.
    • Congress' Harish Janartha won Shimla Urban seat defeating nearest BJP rival Sanjay Sood
    • BJP candidate and minister Sukh Ram Chaudhary won from Poanta Sahib.
    • Former Union minister late Sukh Ram's son Anil Sharma retained Mandi Sadar seat for BJP.

    Congress observers meets Himachal Pradesh governor

    Himachal Pradesh Congress in-charge Rajiv Shukla and party observers Bhupesh Baghel and BS Hooda meet Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar. They informed the governor that the party has the majority and will seek a formal meeting with him later to stake claim to form the government.

    Himachal poll result: No groupism in Congress, Pratibha Singh now says

    Hours after her statement sparked controversy, Himachal Pradesh Congress chief Pratibha Singh said there is no groupism in the party. "We will be holding a meeting in the evening and then deciding the name of the CM. There is no groupism and everybody is with us," Pratibha Singh said. Earlier she had said the party cannot ignore the person (her husband- Virbhadra Singh) in whose name it contested the polls and won.
