Russia calls for international investigation into Kiev nuclear weapons stockpile

Moscow has called on the General Secretariat of the International Atomic Energy Agency to study information published by Russia’s foreign intelligence service that Kiev is storing weapons in nuclear power plants, according to Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for Russia’s foreign ministry, on Friday .

Zakharova said in a press release: “Everyone paid attention to the statement of the director of foreign intelligence, Sergey Naryshkin, that Ukraine is storing weapons and ammunition that it receives from Western countries, on the territory of nuclear power plants.”

He added: “We believe there is a need for the IAEA secretariat to pay close attention to this information and not rely on hasty reports from its inspectors that they have not noticed any such activity at the nuclear power plant.”

And he continued: “We ask the IAEA secretariat not to rush to conclusions and assessments about the current situation, as well as to take a closer look at what is happening now at Ukrainian nuclear power plants.”

For his part, adviser to Ukrainian President Mikhail Podolyak said on Monday that Kiev had never stored any munitions of any kind on the territory of the country’s nuclear power plants.

Podolyak wrote on Twitter: “Ukraine has never stored weapons on the territory of nuclear power plants. Ukraine is always open to inspection bodies, including the International Atomic Energy Agency.”

Interestingly, the Russian intelligence press office announced last week that Ukrainian forces are storing Western-supplied weapons and ammunition on the territory of nuclear power plants.

According to Russian intelligence, most of these weapons include “the most expensive and rare HIMARS missiles of the Ukrainian forces and foreign air defense systems, as well as large-caliber ammunition”.
