The No.1 pound-for-pound fighter is looking to defeat the No.2 pound-for-pound fighter in the way of Makhachev. A feat that has never been accomplished, as the situation has never arisen.

It comes only six months after he became the first person to beat the same opponent in UFC title fights three times, when he obliterated Max Holloway in their featherweight title bout.

The main event is such a tantalising bout for fans, not only because it has the possibility to send either Volkanovski or Makhachev into the MMA stratosphere, but also because the match up between the Aussie’s striking and the Russian’s wrestling is so intriguing.

For Australians it is even sweeter as it is the first time in over three years that fights are back on home soil at RAC Arena in Perth.

It’s made even more exciting by the co-main event between Yair Rodríguez and Josh Emmett, as they attempt to edge closer to the featherweight title, which Volkanovski currently holds, when they fight for the interim belt.

Both these fighters have been clambering the featherweight ranks to get towards Volkanovski’s prized belt, with fireworks expected when they meet on Sunday.

In the third last fight, hometown hero Jack Della Maddalena will likely be getting a royal welcome as he walks to the Octagon to face Randy Brown, in a fight that could end in a very bloody manner.

Also in the main card is heavy-handed Justin Tafa, who will be looking to put Parker Porter’s lights out.

Kicking off the main card is Melbourne fighter Jimmy Crute who is back after a long injury layoff and will be looking to get back in the winning column when he faces Alonzo Menifeld.

There is also a stacked Australian and New Zealanders lineup in the prelims with Tyson Pedro, Joshua Culibao Shane Young, Jamie Mullarkey and Jack Jenkins all fighting.
