OKLAHOMA CITY POLICE SHARED THIS POST ON SOCIAL MEDIA, CALLING THE PROGRAM FAKE AND A WAIT TO TARGET SENIORS. AUTHORITIES SAY THE CITY HAS NO FUNERAL COSTS PROGRAM. AND THIS PARTICULAR SCAM THEY’VE MANUFACTURED THE CITY LOGO TO APPEAL TO THEIR SERVICES. THE NAKED EYE. THE POST LOOKS CREDIBLE, BUT POLICE SAY IT’S NOT. THESE SCAM ARTISTS COME UP WITH SEVERAL DIFFERENT VARIATIONS OF HOW THEY CAN OBTAIN YOUR MONEY IN DIFFERENT WAYS. AND SO THIS IS ANOTHER VARIATION OF A SCAM THAT ARE PARTICULARLY TARGETING ELDERLY VICTIMS. IT’S ALWAYS BEST TO CHECK WITH A FAMILY MEMBER OR CHECK WITH WITH SOMEONE ELSE, REALLY GET SOME BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON ON WHAT THAT SERVICES BEFORE YOU JUST SEND MONEY. FUNERAL DIRECTORS SAY THE BEST WAY TO GUARANTEE YOUR BEING TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF TOR THE FACILITY IN PERSON AND ALWAYS ASK THE FAMILY SERVICE COUNSELOR TO PROVIDE THEIR STATE INSURANCE LICENSE. THE PRESIDENT OF THE OKLAHOMA FUNERAL DIRECTORS ASSOCIATION TOLD ME TODAY CASES LIKE THIS AREN’T COMMON, BUT REMAINS SENIORS. THAT IF A DEAL IS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE, IT LIKELY IS WHEN IT COMES TO FUNDING YOUR FUNERAL. HE SAYS THERE’S NO MAGICAL SOLUTION. A social media post by the police department said there is a post circulating the internet with a fake Oklahoma City government seal, offering a program that would cover burial costs, as well as other benefits. Police said this is a way to target seniors, and the city doesn't have a funeral cost program.“In this particular scam, they manufactured the city logo to appeal to their services,” Master Sgt. Dillon Quirk, with the police department, said. “These scam artists come up with several different variations in how they can obtain your money in different ways. This one particularly targets elderly victims.” The president of the Oklahoma Funeral Directors Association said cases like this aren't common, but they are reminders that, if a deal is too good to be true, it probably is. The best way to guarantee people aren't being taken advantage of is to tour facilities in person and always ask the family service counselor to provide their state insurance license. “The bottom line is, if you don’t know the person, don’t send them random money,” Quirk said. "A lot of times it’s hard to get that money back once you’ve given it out to these scam artists.
