Three teams were seen as having superior talent going into the 2023 World Baseball Classic: Team USA, Samurai Japan, and the Dominican Republic. The United States and Japan appeared in the finals in a field of 20 teams, living up to their reputations, while the Dominican Republic was unable to go past the pool round. In the end, Japan triumphed, becoming only the second team—after the Dominican Republic in 2013—to go unbeaten in the WBC competition.

Although the field is filled with talented athletes, only the Dominican Republic, Japan, and the United States have advanced to the finals so far. However, two of these teams will face off in the gold medal game for the first time at the WBC in 2023. Cuba, Korea, and Puerto Rico twice were also runner-ups. With its 3-2 victory over the United States on Tuesday, Japan once again cemented its position as a preeminent baseball superpower. Shohei Ohtani was the key player.

Which Country Acquired Most WBC Championships?

Japan is the only team to have won multiple gold medals in the World Baseball Classic, which has now seen five iterations. Both the Dominican Republic and the United States won in 2013 and 2017, respectively. In the history of the competition, Japan has been the World Baseball Classic's most reliable force. Due to its third-place finishes in 2013 and 2017, it is the first team to advance to the semifinals all four years. No other squad has advanced further than twice to the semifinals.

The only other nations with two semifinal appearances before 2023 are Korea, the Netherlands, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and the United States. In 2009, the United States came in fourth, while in 2006, the Dominican Republic came in fourth. Korea finished second in 2009 and third in 2006, while Puerto Rico finished second in back-to-back championships (2013 and 2017).

In 2013 and 2017, the Netherlands came in fourth place. It shouldn't be shocking that Japan enters 2023 with the most World Baseball Classic individual game victories due to its previous championships. Puerto Rico, however, has 20 overall victories, which puts it ahead of the other two title winners despite the fact that it has yet to claim a championship.
