ALBANY, NY (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) – As the days become warmer in Central New York, the New York State Department of Health is urging New Yorkers to be vigilant against ticks.

In recognition of Tick Bite Prevention week, which runs through Thursday, March 30, the Department of Health warned on Monday, March 27 that ticks will become more prevalent as people get out into the warmer weather and spring gets into full swing.

Since 2013, the State has averaged more than 6,700 new cases of Lyme Disease each year, with its highest number being more than 8,000 in 2019. Lyme disease mostly comes from bacteria transmitted by deer ticks, which become more active as temperatures rise. Ticks can also carry Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Powassan encephalitis, and many other diseases which can become serious if not treated quickly.

The state says there are many ways you can prevent tick bites and Lyme Disease, including keeping long hair tied back when outside and wearing long pants and long-sleeved shirts. They also suggest regularly checking for ticks and immediate removal if found on your body.

For more information on preventing Lyme Disease, the department asks you to check their “Be Tick Free” website at https://www.health.ny.gov/publications/2825/
