World Cup 2023: "India Are A Team Under Achieving" - Says Ex-England Captain Michael Vaughan

Ex-England captain Michael Vaughan claims that India have been underachieving in white ball cricket despite the talent and depth they possess.

After a recent series loss against Australia at home, India have no scheduled ODIs at home before the ODI World Cup on home soil in October-November this year. Concerns are raised by many in regard to Men in Blue’s 50-over performance.

England will go into the World Cup as the defending champions. India lost to New Zealand in the semi-final of the 2019 tournament. More recently, India lost to the English by 10 wickets in the 2022 T20 World Cup semi-final.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has now torn into India’s recent form in limited-overs cricket, calling the team underachievers.

IPL 2023 | India National Cricket Team | Chennai Super Kings (CSK) | Delhi Capitals (DC) | Gujarat Titans (GT) | Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) | Lucknow Supergiants (LSG) | Mumbai Indians (MI) | Punjab Kings (PBKS) | Rajasthan Royals (RR) | Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) | SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH)

“India are a team under achieving so much in White ball cricket .. They have so much talent & depth .. 6 months away from a home World Cup & along way off from winning it at the moment,” he said in a recent tweet.

The last 3 ODI World Cups are being won by host nations. India won the 2011 tournament under MS Dhoni’s captaincy, Australia won in Australia in 2015, and England won the ODI World Cup in England in 2019. The pattern suggests India might win the tournament this year, despite not looking like the best team 6 months ahead of the tournament.

Michael Vaughan hails England as favorites to win the 2023 ODI World Cup

It can be argued that England are currently the best limited-overs team in the World. They have done something no team has ever done in history, being the defending champions of both – the ODI and T20 World Cup. Michael Vaughan expects them to continue the streak by winning the 2023 ODI World Cup in India.

“I have to say that England are the favourites even if it’s in conditions that you know is little bit different to what it was in 2019 when they won the World Cup (in England). They (England) have got good spin options. They have got good players who play spin nicely. They have got good variations with the seam bowlers, Jofra Archer coming back (from injury) is huge. And Mark Wood is bowling at 90 miles per hour. So I think England have got the experience,” said Vaughan

England are currently the 4th ranked ODI team, and they stand 2nd on the ICC ODI World Cup Super League table. They have been in up-and-down form recently, winning ODI series against Pakistan and Bangladesh this year and losing to South Africa.
