Movies from the Balcony series at UPAC opens with ‘Dazed and Confused’

KINGSTON, N.Y. — The Ulster Performing Arts Center’s new Movies from the Balcony series will begin in April.

The series opens with a 4K restoration of the 1993 film “Dazed and Confused” on April 20, at 7:30 p.m. Pre-show performance by local puppeteer Paper Heart Puppets.

Next up is “Memoria” (2021) on May 4, at 7:30 p.m. A winner of the 2021 Cannes Juror Prize, this film willl only ever be available in theaters. Pre-show features a musical performance by Kingston-based ambient musician J. Ashdown.

UPAC will then screen “Days of Heaven” (1978) on May, 18, at 7:30 p.m. The pre-show features the local theater company Definitely Human Theatre.

Next in the series is Stephen Spielberg’s 2021 adaptation of “West Side Story” on June, 9, at 7:30 p.m. The pre-show will spotlight storyteller, musician and educator, David Gonzalez.

A happy hour precedes each film starting at 6 p.m. at UPAC’s upstairs balcony lounge. The screenings feature pre-movie happenings with local artists, artisans, along with half-price beer and wine along with free snacks and soda.

Then, after a summer break, the screenings return on Oct. 17, at 7:30 p.m. with a journey back to the silent era with Fritz Lang’s “Metropolis.” The screening will feature organist Peter Krasinski playing his original score. Before the film, Krasinski will share a talk on the history of silent horror films, using clips from the various films of the era.

The series concludes with Frank Capra’s timeless 1946 holiday classic “It’s a Wonderful Life” on Dec. 15, at 7:30 p.m. A special holiday puppet show featuring Paper Heart Puppets precedes the feature.

The series is presented in partnership with the city of Kingston with funding from the American Rescue Plan Act.

Accessible seating is also available in the orchestra section, all films and times are subject to change.
