CHARLOTTE — On Saturday, the gym at Renaissance West STEAM Academy got a total makeover and became a laboratory for the day.
Hosted by the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, the Charlotte Girls Tech Summit was held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to get more girls interested in the science and technology fields. Girls in grades 6th through 12th went to the event and spent their day doing hands-on workshops with both experts and students in the STEAM field.
Experts from Apple, Microsoft, and Johnson C. Smith University worked together to set up the workshops.
National Coalition of 100 Black Women Education Committee chairperson, Dr. Lisa Workman, said having the experts there during the workshops allows the girls to think outside of the box.
“Just having someone here for them to talk to and ask questions can cause them to think more in-depth about, well, if we can do this, maybe this can work. That’s something we all need,” Workman said.
