UPDATED: Shinnston Powerball winner comes forward

SHINNSTON, W.Va. – The winner of a $500,000 winning Powerball ticket purchased in Shinnston has been identified as David G. by the West Virginia Lottery. The ticket was purchased at Hammer’s Market on Clement Street, owned by Steve Hamrick.

“He’s a local Shinnston fellow that plays the lottery every day,” Hamrick said. “He plays the Daily Three, Daily Four, and all the Powerball, Megaball, and Lotto—he puts a lot of money in it every week.”

David G. increased his earnings from $50,000 to $500,000 by purchasing the Power Play option, and Hamrick said he remembers others when he wins.

“He’s hit the Daily Four once for $5,000, and he’s a good tipper,” Hamrick said.

Hamrick’s selling the winning ticket does come with a $5,000 windfall.

“Anything I cash in on scratch-offs or Daily Three or Daily Four, the payoff is 1% from the West Virginia Lottery,” Hamrick said.

Hamrick says he’ll use some of that money to add to the promotion of his business as a winning lottery retailer.

“The West Virginia Lottery is supposed to send me a banner representing a local winner, and I plan on having a local vendor make me a metal sign, which I’m going to put in my parking lot,” Hamrick said.
