Prisoners given lessons in public speaking, music and beekeeping to learn ‘vital’ skills

PRISON inmates have had lessons in public speaking, a report reveals.

Experts from Toast­masters ran two four-hour workshops to train cons how to deliver a speech.

They were guided on how to curb their nerves.

A report on HMP Grendon in Bucks by the jail’s Independent Monitoring Board (IMB) said: “The 11 participants were engaged and supported each other.”

The IMB also said there were music sessions where the men “use a studio to write and record music and generally develop their skills”.

“Funds from the Hope Springs Farm Shop were used to buy two colonies of bees.

“The honey was sold in the shop and there are plans for men to be trained to care for the hives.

“Staff recognise the need for more enrichment activities and the council organised evening clubs of table tennis and pool.”

And two colonies of bees were bought with plans for lags to be taught to care for hives.

The Prison Service said: “Workshops help offenders learn vital skills to get jobs on the outside — cutting crime and keeping the public safe.”
