LANSING, MI -- A Berrien County man decided to try an old favorite and it led to a $300,000 win while playing the Michigan Lottery’s Mystery Key Cashword instant game.
“It had been a while since I’d played a Cashword game, so I decided to give it a try and buy a ticket while I was at the store one day,” said the 68-year-old winner who chose to remain anonymous. “I scratched the ticket when I got in my car and was surprised at how many words I was revealing. When I finished scratching the ticket and counted 10 words for a $300,000 prize, I was shocked! I had to have someone else look the ticket over to make sure I was reading it right.”
The winner bought his ticket at the Family Fare Quick Stop, located at 1600 28th Street Southwest in Wyoming and visited Lottery headquarters in Lansing recently to claim his prize. With his winnings, he plans on paying some bills and helping out his family.
“I recently retired, so winning came at the perfect time and will provide a nice financial cushion for retirement,” said the winner.

The last players from Michigan to win a Mega Millions or Powerball jackpot is the Wolverine FLL lottery club which claimed a $1.05 billion jackpot in March 2021. With their winnings, the group plans to give back to the community.
And while they were lucky winners, it’s smart for players to check their tickets immediately as a winner worth $1 million sold in Warren in 2021 went unclaimed. The money instead went to the state’s School Aid Fund.
