Cannabis company closing Worcester and Framingham dispensaries

Trulieve's cannabis dispensary in Worcester
Trulieve, a Florida-based cannabis company with dispensaries in Worcester, Framingham, and Northampton, will close all three of those operations on June 30. It will fully withdraw from the Massachusetts market by the end of 2023 in what it is calling a proactive step to preserve cash and improve its financial performance.
"These difficult but necessary measures are part of ongoing efforts to bolster business resilience and our commitment to cash preservation as we continue to focus on our business strategy of going deep in our core markets and jettisoning non-contributive assets," CEO Kim Rivers said in a Thursday press release. "We remain fully confident in our strategic position and the long term prospects for the industry."
Truelieve already closed retail locations in Palm Springs and Venice, California, as well as the Nevada wholesale market, according to the press release. The announcement of the closure of the Massachusetts dispensaries is in tandem with the closure of its retail location in Grover Beach, California.
The Tallahassee company had to pay a $14,000 Occupational Safety and Health Administration fine at the end of 2022 after a worker died on site in Holyoke in January 2022. The worker, Lorna McMurrey, was hospitalized and ultimately died after inhaling cannabis dust at the facility, officials alleged. At that time, Trulieve agreed to perform a study determining whether ground cannabis dust would be classified as a hazardous chemical, per OSHA regulations.
Truelieve had at one point intended to open another Worcester location but could not due to limitations on the number of dispensaries a company can have in Massachusetts.
Trulieve entered the Worcester market in 2021 after a $13.5-million acquisition of Nature’s Remedy’s Worcester location.
