LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

We have bigger worries than AI

The origins of artificial intelligence in this country can be traced back to the mid-1950s.

By then there were countless science-fiction accounts of robots eventually taking over the world.

And while it quickly became a popular theme in books, movies and television, it wasn’t taken any more seriously than tales about vampires, werewolves or other creatures of the night.

Now, all of a sudden, we’re told that artificial intelligence is a growing menace that should be considered as potentially dangerous as nuclear weapons, climate change, gun deaths or even the mind of Marjorie Taylor Greene.

No less an authority than Sam Altman, an expert in the study of nonhuman thought, recently testified before Congress to warn us that without government safeguards, the future of mankind could fall prey to machinery that is lacking moral scruples.

Does anyone else see the ultimate irony in all this? For one thing, the Supreme Court has no ethics code.

What’s more, a disgraced former president has been impeached twice and convicted of sexual assault and battery.

To make matters far worse, the vast majority of Republicans in Congress continue to perpetuate a lie that’s torn our nation apart while their self-proclaimed leader stages pep rallies and phony town hall meetings.

While Altman may have a valid argument regarding the regulation of artificial intelligence in the future, what are we to do with the abundance of human misconduct in today’s world? At least with robots, you can always pull the plug.
