In their pursuit to bolster their running back depth, the Miami Dolphins reportedly “inquired” about acquiring Detroit Lions running back D’Andre Swift.
According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Dolphins looked into trading for Swift following the Lions’ selection of Jahmyr Gibbs in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft.
The Dolphins’ interest in Swift comes as no surprise, as the team is actively seeking to strengthen their backfield for the upcoming season. However, the potential deal for Swift did not materialize, as the Lions ultimately decided to trade him to the Philadelphia Eagles.
In exchange for Swift, the Lions secured a fourth-round pick in the 2025 draft from the Eagles, along with a seventh-round selection in the 2023 draft. This transaction signals a new direction for the Lions’ running back corps, while also providing the Dolphins with a missed opportunity to acquire the talented rusher.
Beyond the failed pursuit of Swift, there has been ongoing speculation that the Dolphins are exploring other options at the running back position. One name that has emerged is Dalvin Cook, the star running back for the Minnesota Vikings and a Miami native.
Cook’s ties to the city have sparked rumors of a potential homecoming, with the Dolphins linked to him during the offseason.
As the 2023 season approaches, the Dolphins continue their search for additional firepower in the backfield. With Swift no longer a viable option, Miami fans will have to wait on news of any potential moves that could strengthen their team and provide much-needed depth at the running back position.
