Khelo India University Games concludes, Panjab University tops with 69 medals

Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, (total 68 medals — 24 gold, 27 silver, 17 bronze) stood second, followed by Jain University, Karnataka (total 32 medals — 16 gold, 10 silver, 6 bronze).

The third edition of Khelo India University Games, organised in four cities of Uttar Pradesh from May 25 to June 3, concluded in Varanasi on Saturday evening, A simple closing ceremony was held in view of the train accident in Odisha. More than 4,000 athletes from 108 universities in the country participated in the games.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said, “Despite the heat, the way the players participated in this event with full readiness and won medals, I congratulate and wish them the best. I heartily congratulate those who displayed excellent sportsmanship here. I am sure that in the next competition and through excellent performance, these players will get medals.”

During the closing ceremony, a short film summarising the third edition of the Khelo India University Games was screened along with selected cultural programmes. At the end of the closing ceremony, CM Adityanath, Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur and other guests congratulated the winning teams of the third edition of the Khelo India University Games.

With a total of 69 medals — 26 gold, 17 silver and 26 bronze — Panjab University stood first, followed by Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar (total 68 medals — 24 gold, 27 silver, 17 bronze) and Jain University, Karnataka (total 32 medals — 16 gold, 10 silver, 6 bronze).

Adityanath said in the last one week, more than 4,000 players from 108 universities of the country, with their skills and ability have implemented the Prime Minister’s resolutions of ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat’ as well as the Khelo India campaign.

Festive offer

The CM said the event was started on May 25 and various competitions took place during this period. “I am glad to learn that youth and common citizens had a very positive attitude toward competitions,” he said.

“It was an incredible moment for all of us, and the Prime Minister’s resolve was reflected in the youths’ enthusiasm and commitment to the sport, as well as in the magnificence, divinity, and success of the event. I thank all the players who participated in this entire event, and who have won medals,” said the CM.

Praising the players, the CM said, “We were concerned because these games were being organised in the scorching heat. Although we wanted to organise this program in February or March, preparations were going on for the municipal elections at that time. These games were completed here in the best manner possible very quickly after the elections were completed.”

Adityanath said, “We all know that sports competitions in the country are reaching new heights. Be it Sansad Khel Pratispardha or Khelo India University Games, or any other national or international level competition, the rate of participation and medals of Indian players have increased in the past nine years. The work done for sports infrastructure during this period is encouraging for everyone.”

“Even in Uttar Pradesh, through the Sports and Youth Welfare Department, the double-engine government is continuously working on this. Playgrounds are being built in all gram panchayats. The process of construction of a mini-stadium at every development block level and a stadium at the district level is going on. Action is being taken to construct an open gym near the playground in the village and in a park in the urban area, while work is also being done to provide sports kits to Yuvak Mangal Dal and Mahila Mangal Dal in rural areas,” said the chief minister.
The CM informed that so far, more than 65,000 sports kits had been made available to Yuvak Mangal Dal and Mahila Mangal Dal of Uttar Pradesh. “We are all engaged with full readiness to take India’s potential to the global stage through sports by joining the Prime Minister’s resolution and Khelo India University Games is an example of that,” he said.

During the closing ceremony, the chief minister and other guests, athletes, coaches, and staff present at the event paid their respects by observing a two-minute silence for the people who lost their lives in the Balasore train accident.

Anurag Thakur said Khelo India University Games is such a platform where players from every corner of the country can show their talent and skills.

“In order to make India a powerhouse in sports, Prime Minister Modi has increased the budget for sports by three times, while more than 300 basic infrastructure
facilities are being built,” added Thakur.
