Actor Barry Newman has died aged 92.

The movie and TV actor, who is best known for his role as Kowalski in the 1971 crime thriller Vanishing Point, passed away on May 11, his wife Angela confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter on Sunday (June 3).

Barry is also known for being cast in the Richard C. Sarafian film Vanishing Point following a career on Broadway and in the 1970 film The Lawyer.

His cause of death has not yet been revealed.

Barry’s extensive filmography also includes a selection of Hollywood blockbusters and cult classics, including Sylvester Stallone’s Daylight, Steven Soderbergh’s The Limey, and 40 Days and 40 Nights.

He was also in the films City on Fire, Amy, and Good Advice, among other films.

In television, he also starred in the L.A. Law, Murder, She Wrote, The Fall Guy and The O.C. - where he played Professor Max Bloom.

The actor also reprised his role as Petrocelli in the 1974 T.V. movie Night Games and on the T.V. series Petrocelli, which ran 44 episodes over two seasons from September 1974 through March 1976.

Elsewhere, he starred in a selection of theatre plays, including What Makes Sammy Run? as well as Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap and Pretty Boy Floyd.

Barry was diagnosed with vocal-cord cancer in 2009.

He stepped back from acting but did return to star in the independent film Finding Hannah in 2022.

Fans have since shared heartfelt tributes online.

“R.I.P. Barry Newman, star of the extraordinary film Vanishing Point, which was also the inspiration for the 1997 album by Primal Scream.” penned one follower.

While a second person tweeted: “Just learned that Barry Newman, Kowalski, died on May 11 at the age of 92. One of the coolest underrated actors who starred in 2 grossly underrated car chase movies.”

He is survived by his wife.
