‘A lot of blood’: Man charged over stabbing at Brisbane train station

A spate of alleged attacks across Brisbane in recent days has spurred police to assure the community they are preventing crime and checking young offenders are complying with their bail.

Three incidents, including an alleged stabbing of a security guard and a worker at a major Brisbane train station, prompted the reassurance from Acting Chief Superintendent Andrew Pilotto, who oversees the South Brisbane district.

Police have since arrested and charged a 28-year-old man from the Gladstone area, after he allegedly stabbed a security guard and a shop worker near the South Bank station on Grey Street.

The pair had approached the man over reports he had allegedly stolen from a nearby supermarket, and they were allegedly stabbed during an altercation.

“The offender was followed out of the shop up towards the train station stairs,” Pilotto said.

One man was stabbed in the torso, while the other suffered a stab wound to the arm, police said.

“There was a lot of blood on the stairs, I can report that they’re both doing very well,” Pilotto said, adding that the incident could have resulted in two deaths.

The 28-year-old fled the scene but was later found in Highgate Hill, and was arrested without incident.

He was charged with two counts of wounding and possessing a knife in a public place, and was scheduled to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Thursday.

His girlfriend spoke outside court, telling reporters the pair had been on a date before the incident.

“At one point he...just disappeared and I thought I’d meet him at home,” Tiahna Wiles said.

“I was gutted. I do feel sorry for them [the injured men], I hope they’re OK.”

Pilotto said police were also dealing with other investigations, including the arrest of a 17-year-old over an alleged carjacking in Bulimba at the weekend.

“This is a lot of offences to occur in such a short period of time of a violent nature in our area,” he said.

“We are as disturbed as the community, but rest assured, we are very active in preventing crime in South Brisbane.”

He said the teenager appeared in Childrens Court on Wednesday, where police opposed bail, but he was released with conditions.

“I can say that we’ve engaged the youth justice special bail co-ordinator to look at an appeal for that matter,” he said.

On Thursday, detectives investigating the incident also charged an 18-year-old with offences including unlawful use of a motor vehicle and armed robbery.

Pilotto said since March, officers had worked 2800 additional hours of overtime to conduct high-visibility patrols and active bail compliance checks on juveniles.

He said compliance levels had risen by 55 per cent since March.

He also highlighted the value of Jack’s Law, which allows officers to scan people for weapons, saying 10 weapons had been seized in the South Brisbane area in just over a month.

Pilotto said 154 juveniles had received 482 charges as part of a special police operation, which predominantly targets youth offending.

Pilotto also spoke of an attempted robbery in Sunnybank on Wednesday night, where a 23-year-old woman was accosted by an 18-year-old man while she got into her car. A man nearby helped the woman, managing to get her away from the attacker, Pilotto said.

“We are co-operating with the Transport Department, other policing agencies from police headquarters, to really saturate the suburbs of Brisbane and south-east Queensland to deter crime,” he said.
