“The centre of this earthquake had a very shallow depth of 10 km,” it said.

“Shallow earthquakes usually have a larger impact than earthquakes deep in the earth.”

7NEWS Cairns journalist Frank Russo said he felt shaking for a “few seconds”.

“I was laying down and all of a sudden, I felt the ground shaking underneath me, just for a few seconds,” he told 7NEWS.com.au.

He was initially unsure it was an earthquake but soon read other people reporting feeling the tremours on social media.

Meanwhile, a 3.1 magnitude tremor hit Grafton in northern NSW about 2pm on Thursday morning.

No damage or injuries have been reported at this stage.
