The New York Times: Staff news from Washington

Posted

We’re very happy to announce that Dan Appenfeller, who has been one of our excellent senior staff editors on weekends and the nightside, is now Sunday editor in Washington. It can be a tough job overseeing the bureau on what is sometimes a crushing news day, but Dan is ready for it. Since joining The Times two years ago, Dan has turned out sparkling copy on first or second edits of virtually every reporter in the bureau, helped beef up nut grafs, filled in to run our Live blog (including the night that Kevin McCarthy lost his gavel), and kept his sense of humor throughout.

Dan is a former copy editing intern on The Times’ Sports desk, where he edited coverage of the World Cup and Derek Jeter’s final summer as a Yankee. He came to us from Insider’s copy desk, where he edited a wide range of stories, from politics to national security to popular culture. He’s a graduate of the University of Maryland and served as the managing editor of its student newspaper, The Diamondback.

Dan takes the place of Teshia Morris, who after an extraordinary run as Sunday editor is moving to a Monday-Friday schedule to become a crucial anchor of our weekday editing. As Sunday editor, Teshia was a pro at assembling the bureau’s report, collaborating with other editors and desks in New York and remaining calm under pressure. Anyone who has worked with her knows that she is also a fortresslike last line of defense for copy, whether it’s a misplaced modifier, an errant comma or a fact that turns out not to be a fact. Editors and reporters are always glad she’s handling their stories.

Teshia started at The Times in 2011 and spent her first six years on the Metro copy desk, where she was deputy slot. From there she joined the short-lived Live copy desk and then the Print Hub. Before coming to The Times she edited mostly sports copy at The Philadelphia Inquirer and The Baltimore Sun. She’s a graduate of Wichita State University in Kansas, and is a big fan of the Oakland A’s and the band Wilco.

Dan’s first day in the new job was Sunday. Teshia’s first day in her new job was Monday.

Please congratulate them!
