Hollyoaks spoilers follow from Friday's episode on Channel 4 streaming, which doesn't air on E4 until Monday.

Hollyoaks has aired a disturbing cliffhanger for Carter Shepherd in his ongoing conversion therapy storyline.

Over the past couple of months, Carter has been engaged in a one-sided relationship with Maxine Minniver, while also hiding the truth about his sexuality and feelings for John Paul McQueen.

However, his plans to maintain a fake relationship with Maxine came crashing down during last night's episode when she discovered the truth about his secret relationship with John Paul.

Tonight's (March 22) first-look instalment ended with a disturbing cliffhanger as Carter was forced to undergo his own conversion therapy by Declan Hawthorne, after Maxine revealed the truth about his affair.

After discovering the truth about John Paul and Carter, Maxine quizzed the Hollyoaks High headteacher on his sexuality and relationship with John Paul, leading to him to reveal he is bisexual.

However, Maxine refused to forgive him for his actions, emphasising that it wasn't about who he had an affair with but instead the fact that he'd cheated on her.

"It's not about who it was with, it's about trust," she said, adding: "And I don't trust you anymore."

Over at Hollyoaks High, Carter lashed out at John Paul over the discovery of their affair, later suspending him after he left the school to pick up Sally St Claire from hospital.

Back in the village, Carter tried desperately to fix his relationship with Maxine despite her blessing for him to move on and pursue a relationship with John Paul.

"If John Paul makes you happy, you should go for it," she said. "I'm going to move on with my life and you need to do the same."

Things would later take an even more disturbing turn for Carter as he was called to an emergency meeting by Declan – only to discover that Maxine had told him about his relationship with John Paul.

"This evening isn't going to be a typical session," Declan began. "We're here for one of our brothers who's in desperate need of our help."

"What are you... What are you doing," Carter questioned, as he was forcibly restrained by the group before Declan began his speech.
