March Madness sparks surge in sports betting at Hollywood Casino in KCK
With March Madness underway, sports betting madness is too.
Gamblers bet more than $9 million in Kansas last year - and Hollywood Casino says, two days into March Madness, more sports betting than a year ago has already been seen.
It initiated reserved seating in its Sports Book section to meet demand.
"We knew it'd be popular," said Hollywood Casino's Vice President of Marketing, Tyrone Myrick. "People have been asking, 'What are you going to do?' for the last several weeks. Since the Super Bowl ended, people have been asking about what's happening here.'
At Hollywood Casino, there are huge screens showing tickers of all the games, food, drinks, and 140 like-minded friends.
Gardner, Kan. resident Lalo Cerecedes took the day off work to sit at a reserved table.
"We did it last year; it was fun," he said, gesturing at his tablemates, who were also his co-workers. "I always wanted to go to Vegas, but why now? I've got it here in my home state."
They plan to spend all day at the table.
Ty Clark drove 45 minutes from St. Joseph, Missouri, to Hollywood Casino in Kansas City, Kansas.
"We're down here because Missouri doesn't have legalized gambling," he said.
So he spent $125 to reserve three leather seats and a leather couch with a good view of multiple screens, and steps away from a betting kiosk.
Clark thinks he'll spend several hundred dollars there Friday. His wife thinks it'll be at least a thousand.
"Missouri's missing out on a lot of revenue by not legalizing gambling," he said.
Kansas will happily take it. Last March, with more than $9 million in wages made in Kansas, the Kansas Lottery reported that the state received $5,483.
In April, more than $6 million in wages were made, and the state pulled in roughly $12,000.
