POLAND, Ohio (WKBN) – Police in Poland Village are hoping that a local resident’s misfortune can be a lesson for others.

Officers learned a resident received a call recently from someone claiming to be with the U.S. Marshals Service. The caller said the person missed an appearance in court and would be arrested unless the $4,000 bond was paid off.

The victim was then told to go to several locations to buy $4,000 worth of gift cards and give the activation codes to the caller, according to Poland Village Police Chief Don Lambert.

After the victim managed to collect the gift cards, the caller told her that a second charge had been discovered, and they demanded another $4,000 in gift cards.

Police and the U.S. Marshals stress law enforcement will never ask for gift or debit cards.

The chief urges anyone getting calls like this to contact their local police before giving any money.
