Mumbai: Several parts in south Mumbai faced a huge power outage on Thursday night. Due to which, localities around the Mahapalika Marg, GT Hospital, Crawford Market and Marine Lines plunged into a complete darkness, said electricity officials.
The power outage took place from 8 pm onwards, leaving the city’s residents without electricity. As per a statement by the officials, the restoration of supply could only be started after 9:05 pm.
The snag in the electricity was triggered by a tripping in a supply line, the power discom Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking said.

BEST At Fault: Tata Power

A Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport Undertaking (BEST) spokesperson said a 33 Kilovolt feeder from Tata Power's Carnac Bunder facility, which comes to the G T Hospital receiving station operated by it, tripped. As a result of which, the electricity outage occurred. The power supply has been fully restored now, the spokesperson said.
Tata Power, in a late night statement, said the electricity supply was affected due to a 33KV cable fault of BEST. The supply was restored through an alternate source from the Tata Power grid, added the statement.

What Is An Islanding System? How Does It Support Mumbai?

The financial capital has an islanding system which generally ensures continuity in power supply. Built by TATA in 1982, the islanding system disconnects a designated part of the network from the rest of the grid at the time of major power failure.
The key element of the system is that the grid and the designated part will be separated when the frequency of the alternating current will plunge below 47.7 hertz, reported Times of India. This helps the city to maintain the power supply to rail transport and other essential consumers such as hospitals at the time of events of major power cuts.
